No sirve de nada tener una emisora con música para adultos y buscar anunciantes con una oferta muy enfocada al público juvenil.

Un gran número de estaciones en todo el país optaron por emitir exclusivamente música, pero no para atraer a todo tipo de audiencias, sino dispuestas a conquistar mercados específicos.

Por ejemplo, muchos oyentes que se criaron escuchando la radio musical de los años 50 y 60 no necesariamente querían escuchar éxitos pop modernos, así que las estaciones que tocaban canciones populares más antiguas, conseguían fidelizar a dichos oyentes. De hecho, el formato se convirtió en la norma, impulsado por el desarrollo de nuevos tipos de música como el rock psicodélico y el jazz suave entre otros estilos musicales.

Las empresas demográficas pueden identificar el nivel adquisitivo, de educación e incluso las inclinaciones políticas de los oyentes que prefieren un formato particular.
